Sebum is an oily substance that helps keep the hair and skin moisturized. When excess sebum combines with dead skin cells, it forms a blockage in the follicle. Depending on its location, the blocked follicle can result in a whitehead or a blackhead. If bacteria on the skin infects the blocked follicles, it can lead to various types of acne, such as papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts.
